These classes require that you download files to your computer, including
PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat files. This means your computer will have to allow
files to be received. Fire-walls can prevent file transfer. If your computer
has a fire-wall, as long as you have control of it you will be able to
enable the transfer of files (stop the blocking) while you are on the
UniversalClass.com web site. But if you will be using a computer that is part
of a larger network (like a "cybertopia"), be sure the network allows
you to enable file transfer.
Checklist of things to do prior to enrolling in your first class:
Install Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader software. One
way to do so is to double click the downloaded file from within Windows
Explorer - and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen. To
confirm that you have successfully installed each program, look in the list of
programs (when you click Start and then Programs). Recently installed programs
will usually appear at the bottom of the program list.
We also recommend that you register and attend a test course (many are
free) at the UniversalClass.com site to ensure that you understand how to use
the website software and virtual classroom. The

the UniversalClass environment.
On-Line Classes or CD-Rom Courses
What's the difference?
Much of the
same content is presented in both of these training media,
though the CD-rom
courses tend to be a little more comprehensive than the
on-line classes. Here are the most important differences:
Topic range
The machining center and turning center
CD-rom course cover all three tasks a student must master
(programming, setup, and operation) in one course. With the
on-line classes, we cover programming in a separate course from
setup and operation.
Narration
CD-rom courses have PowerPoint
presentations with audio narration (the voice of your
instructor). The on-line classes have very similar PowerPoint
presentations, but with text you must read.
Manual
CD-rom courses include a hard copy of
your manual. With our on-line classes, you print the manual
as you go through the course.
Grading
With CD-rom courses, you receive an
answer book and check your own answers. With our on-line classes
your instructor provides grades and comments for each exercise
and assignment.
Price
The machining
and turning center CD-rom courses sell for $249.00. The on-line
classes that cover the same content (programming, setup, and
operation) total $168.00 (without the certificate option, which
costs $25.00 per course).
Frequency of
use
The CD-rom
courses can be used multiple times to train several people. With
the on-line classes each student must register separately.
